Featuring the IML Investment Team
READ
In our November 2024 webinar series, IML portfolio managers Hugh Giddy and Daniel Moore discussed the Australian stock market’s recent performance and outlook. They noted the narrowness of the market, with the technology and banking sectors delivering significant returns, which have led to high valuations that do not reflect fundamental earnings growth.
Portfolio managers Simon Conn and Lucas Goode presented on the small-mid-cap market. They emphasised similar macro-economic and market themes and highlighted stocks and sectors which they believe are well positioned for further growth in 2025 and beyond. While the small cap sector has performed well this year, it still lags the large cap sector in performance: Simon and Lucas believe there is still good value in small caps and plenty of opportunity for future growth.
In this market environment IML advises caution towards overvalued sectors and emphasises the importance of fundamentals. Globally, rising bond yields and diminishing equity risk premiums in both the US and Australia signal heightened market optimism which should prompt a more conservative investment approach. Despite these market conditions the IML Investment Team continues to find and buy high-quality companies trading at reasonable valuations which they believe offer compelling long-term investment opportunities. IML remains committed to delivering long-term value and income to investors while ensuring downside protection and lower volatility amid the prevailing market exuberance.
